Ingredients

For the Onion Balls
  • 2 large onions finely chopped
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying
For the Zesty Cajun Ranch Dip
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Large Bowl
  • Deep Frying Pan or Pot
  • Slotted Spoon

Method

  1. Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the chopped onions, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, whisk the eggs and set aside. Gradually add the flour to the onion mixture and mix until everything is well combined. Now comes the fun part: form the mixture into small balls and roll each ball in breadcrumbs to coat thoroughly.
  2. Step 2: In a deep frying pan or pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). I like to use a thermometer for this, but if you don't have one, you can drop a small piece of bread in; if it sizzles and browns quickly, you're good to go!
  3. Step 3: Carefully place the onion balls in the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until they turn golden brown, which should take about 3-4 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and let them drain on paper towels.
  4. Step 4: In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, Cajun seasoning, lemon juice, and minced garlic. Mix well and season with salt and pepper to taste. This dip is a total game-changer!
  5. Step 5: Serve the crispy onion balls warm with the zesty Cajun ranch dip on the side. Trust me, your guests will be asking for more!

Notes

These onion balls are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, pop them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes to regain their crispiness. The dip can also be stored in the fridge for about a week.
